Master’s Degree in Medical Education

(Non-thesis option)

Introduction

        College of Medicine, King Saud University was founded in 1967 G / 1387 H as the first college of medicine at the kingdom. In year 1394 the college of medicine girls section was opened, after a year, King Abdulaziz University Hospital joined the college. In year 1401 / 1981 the new campus for College of Medicine and King Khalid University Hospital was opened.

        The college graduated more than 4000 students, and more than 200 postgraduate students graduated from different academic program in addition to more than 700 residents and fellows graduated from different clinical program clinical.

        The Medical Education Department was established in 1430 / 2010.

Vision of the program

  1. To provide the lead and excellence in health professions’ education in the region and beyond.

Mission of the program

  1. The program’s mission is to produce medical and health professions’ educators with the knowledge, skills and behaviours capable of educating and inspiring the next generations of learners and improving education in their organisations.

Program objectives

The program aims to:

  • Provide a theory informed, practice oriented masters’ level qualification for academics and clinicians working in health professions’ education
  • Prepare health practitioners and academics for educational practice and leadership roles in a range of contexts
  • Draw from international best practice in medical and health professions’ education to develop educators at all levels to design, deliver and evaluate the highest quality education.
  • Equip students with qualitative and quantitative research understanding and skills and research methods appropriate to medical and health professions’ education
  • Develop educators with a critical understanding of the evidence base underpinning contemporary medical and health professions’ education and how this evidence translates into educational practice.

Program’s Outcomes

  1. Knowledge and Comprehension:
    1. Demonstrate understanding of the key concepts and theories underpinning health professions’ education.
    2. Describe and discuss the commonalities and differences between different health professions’ educational approaches and how these manifest themselves in practice.      
    3. Demonstrate understanding of educational research paradigms and how different research methods are used to advance knowledge and understanding.
    4. Demonstrate understanding of the historical development of health professions’ education and the content, context and implications of contemporary debate and dissonances.
    5. Describe and discuss the diversity and inclusivity agendas and their implications in the context of health professions’ education.
    6. Demonstrate understanding of health professions’ education innovation, change models, leadership theories and the use of learning technologies in providing and evaluating education.
  2. B- Cognitive Skills:
    1. Synthesize and evaluate data and information from a range of sources
    2. Critically appraise the educational literature and be able to construct a powerful, coherent, evidence-based argument drawing from relevant literature.
    3. Apply theory to educational practice with the aim of quality improvement and innovation.
    4. Describe, discuss and apply a range of pedagogical approaches underpinned by relevant educational concepts and theories.

Program’s Outcomes

  1. C- Professional and Practical Skills:
    1. Apply the knowledge gained through exploring the evidence base for health professions’ education in producing written work, giving oral presentations and contributing to group discussions.
    2. Demonstrate competence in planning, delivering and evaluating a teaching session or learning opportunity.
    3. Produce written communications that communicate information effectively in a range of formats, including essays, reports, systematic literature reviews and reflective narratives.
    4. Demonstrate team working, leadership and management skills in group discussions and other settings.
    5. Demonstrate awareness of cultural sensitivity and intelligence.
    6. Demonstrate professional and ethical behaviors in interactions with faculty, learners and other group members.    
    7. Utilize appropriate learning technologies in the development and delivery of health professions’ education.          
  2. D- General Skills:
    1. Search databases and other sources of information effectively and efficiently.
    2. Demonstrate high level written and oral communication skills.
    3. Demonstrate understanding of statistical methods and numeracy as appropriate.
    4. Distinguish high quality research from low quality studies and identify gaps and errors in data and information.
    5. Solve problems and address challenges in health professions’ education through drawing on best practice and the literature to develop strategies for change and innovation.
    6. Use word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and other software and applications in designing and delivering teaching and facilitating learning.    

Admission Requirements

  1. In addition to the requirements enumerated in the Unified Law for Graduate Studies at Saudi Universities, and Regulatory and Executive Rules and Procedures of Graduate Studies at King Saud University, the department stipulates the following:
  2. The candidates should hold Bachelor degree from the college of medicine or other health colleges from recognized Saudi or non – Saudi University.
  3. The candidates should hold Bachelor degree of minimum (good).
  4. Passing the TOFEL IBT test with a score of at least) 61(or other equivalent English tests.
  5. Passing the personal interview.
  6. The candidate should have career classification.

Requirements for obtaining the Degree:

  1. Non-thesis option
  2. Passing (34) study units of master’s courses and completing the research project.

Learning, teaching and assessment methods

      Students will learn through a combination of taught lectures, workshops and tutorials supported by online resources and readings.

      Assessment methods enable students to demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes and provide a varied exposure to different types of assessment used in medical and health professions’ education.

       Teachers will be trained to deliver the course and undertake assessments and evaluations.
