Course Overview:
The course is delivered to fifth-year medical students over the course of twelve weeks. It is divided into lectures, seminars, tutorials and clinical training sessions in addition to observation of a group of pediatric inpatients and a midterm written examination. By the end of the course, students shall undergo a final written and practical examination.
The course is overseen by the Curricula and Courses Committee in the Department of Pediatrics, and is delivered by a group of highly qualified pediatric faculty members.
PED 474 General Objectives:
The course aims to:
- Develop clinical skills of dealing with children and their families.
- Improve students' academic achievement in general pediatric diseases, qualifying them to further their general and specialized postgraduate studies.
PED 474 Specific Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Know how to take the medical history of pediatric patients.
- Perform clinical examination on children of all ages and link the medical history with the results of the clinical examination.
- Identify common causes of pediatric medically relevant complaints and clinical signs.
- Distinguish emergency cases that require immediate medical attention from other cases.
- Identify general rules of using laboratory tests to reach the correct diagnosis.
- Identify common pediatric diseases and this includes diagnosis, tests and treatment.
