Introduction;

In a short span of time, Saudi Arabia was able to acquire its place as one of the rapidly developing Third World Countries in the World; needless to say about this physical structure, social and economic which the people of Saudi Arabia can be proud of.

As to this rapid changes, the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat of the College of Medicine, King Saud University has initiated a postgraduate training program in order to produce qualified and capable Otorhinolaryngologist that will uplift the quality of education that it can render will encourage Saudi Medical Graduates from further studying outside the country and will ensure youth that could be leaders of tomorrow.

Currently, the King Saud Univeristy is proud of being one of the instruments in attaining its primary goal of having a successful, productive, dedicated and highly qualified Otorhinolaryngologist  with its 91 Graduates as of last academic year 1434-1435 (2013-2014) and continue to carry on this goal for the betterment of health care service not unlike before that the Kingdom is heavily dependent  with the expatriates in the field of ORL.

 

OBJECTIVES;

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology wants to provide the highest possible standard of training equal to/or exceed those well recognized programs in the developed countries. The program shall fulfill the following objectives:

  1. To produce competent, safe and skilled oto-rhino-laryngologist who will be able to deal efficiently with O.R.L problems in Saudi Arabia.
  2. To provide research environment and facilities for those who would be researchers or academic staff of the specialty.
  3. To award a certificate of specialization (The Fellowship Program of King Saud University) after successful completion of the program,

 

 

PROGRAM OUTLINE;

The five years program of the fellowships consists of two integrating parts: Basic Sciences and Otorhinolaryngology and Related Subjects.

The Basic Science Part will be conducted at the College of Medicine, King Saud University. It consists of:

  1. Didactic lectures
  2. Tutorial
  3. Practical session

 

The Otorhinolaryngology and Related Subjects Part is a five years rotation program based at KSU hospital (KAUH, KKUH). Other Riyadh hospitals e.g. Riyadh Central Hospital, King Faisal Specialist Hospital may be included in the rotation, subject to the prevailing staffing and facilities. Continuous evaluation of these and other hospitals will be done regularly by the department and by Residency Board.

The clinical training including seminars, ward rounds, clinical meeting and journals club in addition to the outpatients and operation theatre teaching. The training program will provide the residents with increasing responsibilities and adequate exposure to clinical materials.

 

Relation of Fellowship with the Diploma Program:

  1. Candidate who are registered in the Diploma Program can be admitted to the Third year of the Fellowship after passing the diploma examination if they satisfy the selection criteria for the Fellowship.
  2. Candidates who are doing the Fellowship program can be admitted to the Diploma Program if the wish so.

 

CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM:

  1. Applicant should be a graduate from King Saud University with the degree of MBBS or its equivalent from other University with minimum grade of "Good".
  2. Successful completion of one year internship.
  3. Passing a personal interview and selection examination in accordance with the policy of Residency Board.
  4. The candidate must provide a release letter from his sponsor for the whole duration of the program.

 

UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE FINAL EXAMINATION, THE CANDIDATE WILL BE AWARDED KSU FELLOWSHIP IN OTORHONOLARYNGOLOGY.
