RESIDENCY PROGRAM

 

INTRODUCTION

The major socio-economical development of Saudi Arabia in the last quarter of the twentieth century is unprecedented. This development involved and improved all sectors of the society including the health care system. New hospitals equipped with some of the finest medical technology in the world and staffed by various personnel including top-flight specialists on various fields. All endeavors to make Saudi Arabia medically self-sufficient.

To participate in these rapid changes, the Department of Radiology of the College of Medicine, King Saud University, has felt the need of initiating a high-grade postgraduate training program in Radiology in order to provide the immediate staffing needs of the Kingdom, as well as ensuring a self perpetuating standard of radiological excellence and training within the Kingdom. The following program for Radiological training is based on mixture of European and North American training methods, and it is designed to graduate highly trained radiologist who will rank with the standards of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists, or the Certificate of the American Board of Radiology.

 

Program Objectives

The Department of Radiology has established a comprehensive Fellowship Program which is designed to graduate highly trained radiologist with both academic and professional competence in modern diagnostic radiology including interventional techniques.

 

The four year fellowship program shall fulfill the following objectives:

  • To produce competent radiologist capable of providing first class specialist service.
  • To identify and encourage the future leaders, researchers and teachers of Radiology.

 

Program Outline

The core program consists of a first year devoted primarily, to acquiring the basic knowledge in radiation, and the scientific and technical skill in understanding the operations of various imaging equipment as well as familiarization with the radiographic anatomy of the body and the pharmacology of various contrast media used in Radiology. This is followed by two-years of using the acquired technical skills in demonstrating the various signs and manifestations of disease radiologically. Thus, the final year is devoted to problem solving exposing the residents to clinical approaches in Radiology.

During this period of training, the residents shall abide by the general rules and practice of the profession including compulsory on-call duties as approved by the Board.

The four –year program of fellowship therefore consists of the following integrated parts:

First Year

A. The Physical Basis of Radiology

B. Radiographic Imaging

C. Radiological Anatomy

D. General Radiology

E. Special Investigations

F. Contracts Media and Pharmacological aids to Radiology

G. Radiological Emergencies

Second & Third

Radiological manifestations of diseases of the body systems with all diagnostic modalities.

Fourth Year

Radiology in relation to clinical problems.

Program Objectives:

  • A basic medical qualification such as the M.B.B.S or equivalent degree acceptable by King Saud University with minimum grade of “Good”.                                                   
  • To have had successfully completed a full year internship period considered as one year of clinical experience.
  • Passing a personal interview and an acceptance examination held by the department.
  • Initial approval letter to enroll in the program from the applicant’s employer, and in case of acceptance, an approval letter to free the applicant to enroll for the whole duration of the program (For Employees).
  • Upon successful completion of the final examination, the candidate will be awarded K.S.U Fellowship in Diagnostic Radiology
