Introduction:

Upon successful completion of a four- year residency program, a candidate will be awarded by the King Saud University a certificate of training in Ophthalmology.

Over the past few decades, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has witnessed a major socio economic development that improved all sectors of the society including the health care system.

While construction of hospitals may be completed in a relatively short period of time, training a manpower in professional fields may take years and sometimes decades.

In a recent study on the ophthalmic resources in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, it has been shown that 95% of the Ophthalmologists are non-Saudis and only 2% are American Board certified or fellows of the Royal Colleges.

It has been estimated that there is one Ophthalmologist per 56,250 individuals in Saudi Arabia. Ideally, there should be one Ophthalmologist per 20,000 population.

The majority of Ophthalmologists working in the Kingdom at the present time are from India, Pakistan, Egypt, (71%) and approximately 26% are from Western countries.

The program of training in ophthalmology is conducted according to the general guideline set forth by the residency accreditation committee of the American Boards.

This program started in October 1984, organized graduate training in ophthalmology with a wide dimension and high standard.

The requirements for residents training in the joint KSU, KKESHFH residency program are tailored to provide a stable, well coordinated, progressive and structured educational Board.

 

Specific Aim:

The four-year training in ophthalmology should allow the candidate to sit for a final written and an oral examination which is equivalent to that of the American Board of Ophthalmology of the F.R.C.S.

The Department of Ophthalmology at the King Saud University Medical College and the King Khaled Eye Hospital have initiated a joint collaboration in providing postgraduate training in ophthalmology.

Both institutions have agreed on a board spectrum collaboration of academic commitments and to provide each other with specific supportive services in order to improve the delivery of health care of the patients at either institution, as well as to provide better education for residents.

 

Requirements for joining the Residency Program:

 

The following are the requirements for joining the Residency Program at King Khalid Eye Specialist Hospital:

1. Applicant must have completed a full medical school curriculum and graduates from a recognized university.

2. Applicant must have completed one year of internship.

3. Applicant should have a minimum standard of “good” level at the time of graduation or equivalent in the semester system.

4. Applicant must complete an application from and must sit for an entrance exam given by the Department of Ophthalmology.

5. Applicant is required to have personal interview by the Residency Program Acceptance Committee.

 

The selection of the residents will be carried out by the Program Acceptance Committee and applicants will be notified.

 

Location of the Department:

The Department of Ophthalmology at the King Saud University carries out its activities in three locations: The King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, the King Khaled University Hospital, and the King AbdulAziz Hospital.
