Residency Training Program in

Obstetrics & Gynecology

 

INTRODUCTION

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties introduced residency training in Obstetrics & Gynecology in 1995. The training entails a broad spectrum of experience in Obstetrical & Gynecological diseases. The educational program provides an opportunity for increasing responsibility with appropriate supervision and formal instruction. The objective is to train competent, safe, skilled and knowledgeable specialists capable of functioning independently in the field of Obstetrics & Gynecology. The structures training ensure the resident gets substantial, diverse and appropriate surgical experience after he/she has mastered the basic skills.

Residency training is essentially in-hospital training and is done only at centers accredited by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.

Training is comprehensive which includes inpatient, ambulatory and emergency room care. Trainee is involved in direct patient care with gradual progression of responsibilities. Regular and punctual attendance is necessary for instructional and learning sessions. Continuity of the effort is essential for self-learning though "on the job' experience. Continuity of learning process through study of journals, review article and keeping abreast with the recent advances in essential of the training program.

Residency training in Obstetrics & Gynecology, like any other specialty, is a measure of excellent professional standards set by the Obstetricians and Gynecologist to train younger generation of doctors who will master the art of tomorrow.

Candidate who successfully complete the training and acquire knowledge and skills of the appropriate standards set by the Scientific Board are awarded the Saudi Specialty Certificate in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

 

AIMS AND GOALS OF TRAINING IN OBSTETRICS & GYNOCOLOGY

The aim of the Training Program in Obstetrics & Gynecology is to provide a competent, safe and skilled Specialist in all matters relating to the diagnosis and management of obstetrical and gynecological patients. The program of training comprises theoretical, clinical and practical components.

1. Theoretical Education

The aim of the theoretical studies are:

  • The accumulation of the greatest amount of sound and recent knowledge in the specialty.
  • Promotion of capabilities and aptitudes in systematic research and clear expression in any subject relevant to the specialty.
  • Development of the abilities to translate from the English language to acceptable medical Arabic and vice versa.

 

NB:

No specific teaching manuals or textbooks are designated for the acquisition of knowledge. The trainee is unrestricted to choose from the medical literature (books and periodicals). The duty of the teachers or supervisors is to offer the trainee the necessary guidance and orientation to the good and modern sources of the specialty while delivering a good number of selected courses and lectures.

 

2. Clinical Experience

The aim of this training are:

  • Acquisition of experience in writing good histories, conducting thorough physical examinations and being able to present cases and to discuss clearly their clinical workup.
  • The arrival at an exact diagnosis in obstetrical and gynecological cases based on some systemic exploratory methods and the elaboration of satisfactory procedures in the management.
  • Acquisition of sufficient experience in the application of variable treatments, with special awareness during any unforeseen accidents that might complicate the case and he ability to improvise an alteration in the mode of treatment or the program of action accordingly.
  • Acquisition of human, dignified, and ethical conduct in dealing with patients.

NB:

Clinical training should take place under direct supervision of faculty and trainers.

 

3. Clinical Experience

The aim of the training are:

To prepare the graduate trainee to be able to undertake safety all the procedures and operations in obstetrics and gynecology with the exception of some special operations pertaining to higher specialization. The acquisition training should be in a structured manner.

 

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM

The program is 5 years training program. It is designed to give residents special education and expertise in obstetrics, gynecology and women's health. The supervision is by academic faculty representing specialty areas of clinical care and basic scientific research. The clinical faculty, who are committed teachers and preceptors, are involved in training in various aspects of obstetrics and gynecology. The patient population is drawn from the entire country, providing a wealth of clinical material and an excellent mix of cases. The program is affiliated with Saudi commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS).

2. Staff /Residency Training Committee

> It is a committee under the Postgraduate which include the Program Director, Deputy Program Director, 2 Supervisors, Consultants, 1 Registrar and 1 Representative from the Residents.

>Experienced and certified physicians with subspecialty certificate (Gyne-Oncology, Urogynecology, MFM, REI, and Gen Ob & Gyne).

 

Admission Criteria

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at King Saud University Medical City is happy to welcome interested Residents applicants to join the Residency Training Program.

 

Medical Graduates opting for higher professional training in Obstetrics & Gynecology are required to have the following:

 

1. Saudi Commissions for Health Specialties Acceptance Letter

2. MBBS graduate with a GPA of 2.75

3. Completed 1 year Internship Program

4. SLE: Saudi Commission for Health Specialties License Exam

5. 3 original letters of recommendation

6. Passing the interview
