Four-year Fellowship Programme

Criteria for Admission to the Fellowship Programme

Applicants should be graduates from King Saud University, with the Degree M.B.B.S. or its equivalent from other Universities with a minimum grade of “GOOD”.

Successful completion of one year of internship.

Two recommendations (written references), as table for postgraduate training.

Successful personal interview and formal approval of the Community Medicine.

Compliance with the Residency Board and King Saud University Regulations.

The candidate must provide the letter of release from his sponsor for the whole duration of the fellowship programme (as per rules and regulation King Saud University Fellowship Programme)

 

 

Introduction

The Saudi Board in Community Medicine (SBCM) program leads to a degree which emphasizes solving prevailing public and community health problems, by applying professional inter-disciplinary approaches and methods in a professional environment (such as local, provincial or national health agencies, health care organizations, occupational health settings) or public communities (urban, sub-urban, rural).

The program also prepares students for research roles and settings, emphasizing the understanding of theoretical issues and the application of inter-disciplinary methods to the study of community medicine problems in other than professional settings such as academic institutions and research institutes. Graduates will also be prepared to promote health practices and behaviors, and identify environmental hazards to assure our population stays healthy.

The Saudi Board in Community Medicine (SBCM) degree is recognized by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCHS) as the highest professional degree in community medicine in Saudi Arabia. The program prepares students for practice by instructing them in the core disciplines of community medicine and exposing them to practice settings where these disciplines are applied.

Career opportunities are in various fields as: preventive sectors (public, private), epidemiology (field/clinical applications), health information systems, community medicine administration, international health and societal health in national, regional, international settings.

 

 

Program outline:

This program is four-year training program in Community Medicine. This course aids in the development of health professionals capable, independently and on scientific evidence, of contributing to the improvement of the health of the population, especially in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other GCC states, and provide appropriate solutions for community health problems.

 

By the end of the program, the graduate should be able to carry out the following competencies.

  1. Use appropriate health research methodologies to conduct studies that improve community medicine program delivery.
  2. Analyze community medicine data using appropriate statistical methods.
  3. Use computers for specific applications relevant to community medicine practices.
  4. Recognize, evaluate and prioritize the importance of diseases and conditions of national community medicine concern.
  5. Manage a field project, staff and resources, and be an effective team leader and member.
  6. Develop oral and written community medicine communications.
  7. Train and monitor community medicine professionals.
  8. Educate community medicine professionals in the principles of evidence-based community medicine.
  9. Adhere to the highest community medicine ethical standards.

 

Place of Training

The Saudi Board of Community Medicine is a joint program where training takes place in three different sectors:

  1.  Department of Family and Community Medicine, College of Medicine, King Khalid University Hospital.
  2. Ministry of Health
  3. Riyadh Military Hospital
