 KSU Board Program in Dermatology

 

Introduction:

Dermatology  has a major role to play in today's health care. At present, there is an evident shortage of Saudi Dermatologist. The training facilities and staff in the university hospitals are abundant and training program are well established . These programs presently cater for a large number of resident trainees. The ultimate goal of the program is to graduate competent dermatologist. This program involves four years full time, supervised residency training in dermatology. The University will be the official body responsible for selection of residents, supervision of training, examination and certification of trainees. The program will follow the rules and regulations of King Saud University Postgraduate training.

Program Objectives:

The candidate must fulfill the requirements of each course so that at the end of the residency program he will be able to:

1. To integrate the KSUF competencies in the training of residents.

2. To uphold ethical issues and elucidate their magnitude in the practice of dermatology and venereology to the residents.

3. To fundamentalize to the residents the importance of continuous professional development of the practice of high standards and safe dermatology and venereology.

4.  To engage the residents with the communities for the promotion of health and prevention of diseases in general and in the fields of dermatology and venereology in particular.

5. Perform thorough and suitably oriented history and physical examination.

6. Formulate a reasonable and comprehensive differential diagnosis and recognize common dermatological disorders and many of the rare ones, especially those that are amenable to treatment.

7. Select relevant investigations, logically and conservatively and interpret their results accurately.

8. Select the appropriate methods of treatment with detailed knowledge of drugs, their indications, contraindications and toxicity.

9. Participate in research work.

10. Keep orderly and informative medical records.

11. Educate him/herself and other in his/her field.  

Program Curriculum:

First Year (R1)

  • 1 month rotation in basic sciences.
  • 6 months confined to internal medicine.
  • 3 months in pediatrics.
  • 2 months in Plastic Surgery.

Second Year (R2)

  • 6 months running general dermatology clinics and dermatopathology.
  • 3 months in allergy and STD clinics.
  • 3 months dermatology in-patient referrals.

Third Year (R3)

  • 3 months running hair and pediatrics Dermatology clinics.
  • 3 months running general dermatology clinics and dermatopathology.
  • 3 months dermatology in-patient referrals.
  • 3 months elective internal dermatology rotation.

Fourth year (R4)

  • 3 months running general dermatology clinics and dermatopathology.
  • 3 months running dermatosurgery and laser clinics.
  • 3 months in-patient referrals.
  • 3 months elective external dermatology rotation.

Admission Requirements:

•A basic medical qualification such as M.B.B.S or equivalent degree acceptable by K.S.U with minimum grade of "very good".

•Have successfully completed the internship.

•Passing the Saudi Licensure Exam.

•Passing a personal interview held by the department.

•Two reference  letters from a dermatology consultant.

•Provide a written permission from the sponsoring institution of the candidate allowing him to participate on full time basis for entire period of the program.

Upon successful completion of the examination, the candidate will be awarded King Saud University (KSU) Residency in Dermatology
