Introduction:

The psychiatry postgraduate residency training program at King Saud University is committed to train, educate and prepare the residents to fulfill the many roles of a competitive physicians and to be excellent in their professional careers. The goal of this program is to provide a comprehensive training in the care of mentally ill patients and prepares our residents for a career with a sound clinical and scientific basis, and with skills for ongoing acquisition of knowledge. The curriculum offered during the training is designed to both meet the minimum requirements for the SCFHS and to provide flexibility for exploration of interests toward the resident’s individual career goals.

 

 

TRAINING ROTATION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Junior Residency Level (24 months R1 and R2)

 

The first two years of training the resident shall spend a total of twelve (12) months in General Psychiatry, six (6) months in Psychosomatic Medicine, three (3) months in Neurology and three (3) months in Addiction Medicine.

 

Senior Residency Level (24 months R3 and R4)

 

The second two years of training the resident shall spend a total of six (6) months in Child Psychiatry, four (4) months in Outpatient Psychiatry, six (6) months in General Psychiatry and eight (8) months of Elective Training.  

 

We also train residents from ER, Family Medicine and Neurology Department as part of their rotations.

 

Effective October 2012, we are now accepting Omani Resident Trainees as per agreement between our PGME and Omani board for four (4) years psychiatry residency training program.

Upon successful completion of the training program and passing the final examination the candidate will be awarded a certificate of Saudi Board in Psychiatry from the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
