KSU & SCFHS BOARD PROGRAMS

Internal Medicine

Introduction:

Great residency training starts with motivated residents, enthusiastic staff and organized program. We at King Saud University, Department of Medicine is proud of our graduates – the extraordinary residents over the passed years since the program started on 1981 where many of them now have an outstanding career.

The fundamental goals and objectives of Internal Medicine Residency are to train competent, qualified, caring and sensitive physicians who understand their role in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, the alleviation of suffering, the prevention of ill health and the empathetic support of those, directly or indirectly, afflicted with medical illness.
The King Saud University Fellowship in Internal Medicine, the organization of official professional recognition of those who successfully complete our program, has clearly addressed specific goals and objectives, which serve as the basis for clinical competence. When those goals are met, a resident stands qualified for board acceptance. We at King Khalid University Hospital, King Saud University, strongly ascribe to those standards. Our curriculum and teaching programs are created to meet those objectives.
As the sponsoring institution of this program, King Khalid University Hospital is deeply committed to graduate medical education and assumes the ultimate responsibility .This responsibility extends to all sites at which program residents will be doing their respective rotations. King Khalid University Hospital also fully supports the time and resource needs of its program director and associate program director in meeting the educational and administrative responsibilities of this program.

The Department of Medicine encourages residents to incorporate research into their career. Our institute is well known to have distinguished researchers and research opportunities as well as the diversity of working with fellows, residents, interns and students which gives you a great opportunity to participate in several high key academic activities.

Recently, we introduced a program for final year residents to prepare them for the Saudi Board examination aiming at enhancing their exam skills, overcome common exam associated difficulties and improve their success rate.

Notwithstanding the importance of clinical skills and knowledge of scientific principles, humanistic qualities must be integrated into all aspects of medical practice. The roots of medicine are in science, but medicine is foremost an art. It is most meaningful when practiced with respect for the dignity and worth of all, and with the utmost compassion, integrity, and honesty.

Program:

FIRST YEAR RESIDENTS (Foundation)

The first year residency has been carefully structured to provide all trainees with high quality clinical exposure, appropriate balance between independence and supervision, and emphasis upon core skills that will be used throughout each trainee's career.

The goal of the first year is to allow the resident to recognize acuity of illness and to initiate care in common acute-care settings. They will learn how to manage individual cases and, after initiating interventions, effect and co-ordinate care. A major goal is improvement of efficiency and development of early skills in multi-tasking. Residents will learn how to performed basic medical procedures.

SECOND YEAR RESIDENTS (Continuous Growth)

Second year residents will continue their rotation between general inpatient wards and Subspecialty rotations will be part of second year rotation. These rotations will provide more depth in more specialized field of medicine. The residents should be more knowledgeable and confident in dealing with acute care cases, handling on call, run a resuscitation code and performing medical procedures

THIRD YEAR RESIDENTS (Decision Maker)

Third year rotations will now have the knowledge and skills to be general internal medicine physician. He should be confident in dealing with acute and chronic care medicine with some depth in subspecialties' knowledge. With more orient rotation toward leadership, supervising junior and involved in academic teaching

FOURTH YEAR RESIDENTS (Final Product)

This is a very important year as it represents the last phase of training before residents leave to begin practice or to pursue subspecialty fellowship. During the fourth year, the goal is to greatly enhance the depth of that knowledge base and further refine clinical skills. Forth year will have similar rotation like previous year but with emphasis on consultation service in subspecialty units. The remaining flexible rotation time during the R4 year is structured by the resident with faculty guidance to continue to help prepare the resident for their specific career choice. For those residents who have not completed a research project, they may continue to work on it during the 4th year.
