Guidelines
Department of Medical Education, College of Medicine at King Saud University is keen to attract high caliber doctors to the Medical Electives to foster and explore an area of interest with higher understanding of medical subjects beyond the core curriculum.
GROUP A ELECTIVE : MANDATORY SELECTIVE ELECTIVE
- This is to enrich students clinical experience with an opportunity to choose a specialty of own choice. This type of elective is only for clinical students.
- Compulsory part of clinical curriculum.
- Local attachment (clinical , research , hybrid ) within the Kingdom student has to fill the application in which he is to nominate hospitals and specialties.
- Students have to fill an application form for this program .
- Students will need to arrange approval from concerned university for their Elective
- The Elective will be acknowledged only if the criteria of Elective match with KSU’s regulations.
- Students have to fill an application form for this program.
- Students applying for this , will need to fulfill all expenses for this Elective.
- These fully funded bursaries are open to undergraduate medical students, enrolled on a full time course of studies in medicine at college of medicine , King Saud University.
- The awarding panel/selection committee at King Saud University is pleased to offer bursaries for medical students looking for financial support withtheir clinical and health services electives abroad. Students have to full certain selection criteria for their selection as a potential candidate for these Medical Elective.
- Students have to fill a separate application form .
- The awarding panel/selection committee may set schedule for meetings to finalize thelist of successful students at least twice yearly ( or more frequently depending upon thedistribution of students’ groups).
GROUP B ELECTIVE (SUMMER ELECTIVE PROGRAM) CLINICAL OR PRE-CLINICAL YEARS
- These fully funded bursaries are open to undergraduate medical students, enrolled on a full time course of studies in medicine at college of medicine , King Saud University.
- The awarding panel/selection committee at King Saud University is pleased to offer bursaries for medical students looking for financial support withtheir clinical , research and health services electives abroad. Students have to fullcertain selection criteria for their selection as an potential candidate for these MedicalElective.
- Students at pre-clinical years are also encouraged to apply enabling them to developinquiry and research skills.
- Students have to fill a separate application form.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDENTS
The following criteria are used in selecting students willing to undertake their electives abroad. Thecriteria are comprised of two components:
Major criteria:
- Good attitude, good behavior and a leadership style of personality
- Performance at an excellent level in prior years.
- Good reference reports (two referees are needed).
- Passed summative examinations successfully.
- Have a GPA of 3.75 (at the minimum).
Minor criteria:
- Surviving abilities and the ability to accommodate in a new different environment.
- An application showing a strong justification for undertaking the elective abroad.
Extra bonus:
- Good command of the English Language particularly for those willing to travel to western countries that use English as the first language.
- Receiving one of the Dean’s awards or any other equivalent awards during the university years.
THE PROCESS
- The Department of Medical Education will announce the date for submission the applications for these electives, usually 4 months prior to the commencement of the elective.
- Students should complete the application form and submit the completed forms in the indicated date.
- Some universities abroad will require a good command of the English language. We advise these students to work on their English at least one year before travelling. They might take any of the English language course available in the kingdom and arrange this on their own.
- The applicant has to arrange for a visa if required.
- Immunization might be needed before going to certain countries.
All applicants must submit the following documents:
- A complete application form
- A detailed Curriculum Vita.
- A cover letter summarizing their choices.
- An approval letter from the host university and key academics in the university who will supervise them. (type 2)
- Reference letter from 2 reference academics should be academic staff of the King Saud University.
- For those planning for an elective abroad, they will need their academic records in the English language.
