1) Courses:
Ophthalmology Course for Medical Students – OPT 432
This course is offered to 4th-year medical students to provide foundational knowledge and essential clinical skills in ophthalmology.
It covers the pathogenesis of common eye diseases and conditions and includes hands-on training in clinical settings.
- Credit hours & prerequisites:
4 credit hours – prerequisite: successful completion of the 3rd-year clinical foundation block.
- Learning outcomes:
- Knowledge: recognize common eye diseases and their pathogenesis.
- Skills: perform focused ophthalmic history and examination, identify urgent ocular conditions, and formulate initial management plans.
- Attitudes: demonstrate professionalism, patient safety, and teamwork in clinical settings.
- Knowledge: recognize common eye diseases and their pathogenesis.
Teaching methods: lectures, tutorials, case-based discussions, skills-lab sessions, and supervised clinical practice in both the outpatient eye clinics and the ophthalmology ER.
Assessment Components and Weighting:
- Written examinations (MCQs) – 30 %
- Practical assessment (OSCE/SAQs) – 40 %
- Participation & continuous assessment – 30 %
2) Undergraduate Committee:
The Undergraduate Committee is composed of academic teaching staff and is chaired by the course organizer.
- Mandate: curriculum planning and continuous review, liaison with student affairs, and academic quality assurance.
