DEPARTMENT UNITS
The Units of the Physiology Department:
-
The Department of Clinical Physiology in King Abdul Aziz University Hospital (KAUH) at King Saud University Medical City (KSUMC) :
The Department of Clinical Physiology in KAUH-KSUMC Riyadh, is a state of art department and was the first of its kind in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Functioning as an independent special unit with new diagnostic technologies, the department began providing its diagnostic services to the population of Riyadh region and accepting referrals from all over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This department works in close association with departments of Medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery, Diabetes clinics and university diabetes center. Clinical neurophysiology is an area of medicine in which selected neurological disorders involving central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems and muscles are assessed, monitored, and treated using a combination of clinical evaluation and electrophysiological testing. In addition, the department provide Pulmonary function tests (PFTs), which are noninvasive tests that show how well the lungs are working. The tests measure lung volume, capacity, rates of flow, and gas exchange. This information used to diagnose and decide the treatment of certain lung disorders. Furthermore, this department helps in the process of diagnosing and treating wide range of diseases, such as cerebrovascular diseases, neurological disorders, dementia and encephalopathies, neurological autoimmune diseases, movement disorders, myopathies, neuromuscular transmission disorders and others.
Tests performed
- NCS and EMG : Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and needle Electromyography (EMG) including single fiber testing.
- VEP and ERG: Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP) and Electroretinography (ERG).
- ABR and ECOG: Auditory brain stem response (ABR) and electrocochleography. Moreover, middle and late latency responses related to neurocognitive assessments and screening.
- EEG : The electroencephalogram (EEG) recording systems including epilepsy monitoring unit.
- PFTs: Pulmonary function testing. Full range of PFTs including spirometry, DLCO and plethysmography.
2- The Physiology Department at the Female Campus:
The department has fully equipped teaching labs for students which help them to cover the practical physiology requirements as well as any workshops the department usually holds for students and interested researchers. There are also research labs for female faculty creating important opportunities not only to do research but also collaborate with other departments in the college as well as other colleges including the central female lab for research in the campus.
3- The Physiology Department at College of Medicine in King Khalid University Hospital:
The department has offices for male faculty, staff, lab specialists and technicians as well as female faculty which allows for productive collaboration and convenience of work and efficiency among male and female faculty in order to meet the needs for male and female students. The department also has teaching labs to teach male students from the different health colleges (College of Medicine, college of Dentistry, College of Applied Medical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, College of Nursing ) as well as there are many research labs.
