POSTGRADUATE  PROGRAMMES

•The department also runs various postgraduate courses. These postgraduate studies in the department constitute Programmes leading to Masters and Ph.D degrees

MASTERS PROGRAMME

•Our Masters Programme is a 2-year intensive course consisting of 12 taught modules/courses in the first year, and a hands-on laboratory research project in the second year.

•The main goal of the Programme is to help the students acquire new knowledge and experience in basic and clinical physiological research. The students will also receive training in transferable skills which would help prepare them their subsequent careers.

•By the end of the Programme, the students are expected to have acquired sufficient knowledge and basic understanding of the practical skills and techniques applicable to scientific research, as well as critical awareness and understanding of current issues and developments in the field of physiological sciences. These would enable them to pursue their ambitions and careers in one of the following:

•a) Enrolment in a PhD granting Programme

•b) Employment in a research laboratory in academia.

•Course Name:      Physiology of the Cardiovascular System (Basic)

•Course Code:       PSL – 501

•Course Duration:  12 – weeks

•Coordinator:  Dr. Maha Saja

•Aims & Objectives: To help the students to develop basic understanding of the key concepts about the CVS including properties of cardiac muscle and cardiac electrical activity, excitability, conductivity and rhythmicity.

 

•Course Name:  Physiology of the Respiratory System

•Course Code:  PSL – 521

•Course Duration:  7 – weeks

•Aims & Objectives:

••  To facilitate student learning of the functions and organization of the respiratory system, as well as mechanisms of breathing.

••  To help students to develop in-depth understanding of lung function in health and disease.

 

•Course Name:  Physiology of Gastrointestinal System

•Course Duration:  11 – weeks

•Aims & Objectives:

·To facilitate student learning of the physiologic anatomy of the gastrointestinal wall, the general and specific characteristics of the smooth muscles.

·To help students to understand the normal functions of the gastrointestinal organ systems and causes and pathogenesis of Jaundice.

•Course Duration:  8 – weeks

•Aims & Objectives: To provide essential facts and concepts of blood physiology, including production and function of blood cells and physiology of haemostasis as well as blood groups and transfusion physiology.

 

•Course Name:  Neurophysiology (Basic)

•Course Duration:  10 – weeks

•Aims & Objectives:

·To facilitate student learning of the basic physiological mechanisms underlying the normal functions of the peripheral and central nervous systems, from applied and practical viewpoints.

·To help students to develop basis understanding of the background of some practical neurophysiological tests such as EEG, EMG, nerve conduction, and evoked potentials (visual, auditory and somatosensory).

 

•Course Name:  Endocrine & Reproductive Physiology

•Course Duration:  11 – weeks

•Aims & Objectives:

·To help students develop an in-depth understanding of endocrinology including the pituitary hormones, mechanisms of biosynthesis and secretion of thyroid and parathyroid hormones, pancreatic hormones (insulin and glucagon), and adrenocorticotropic hormones.

·To help students to develop clear understanding of the male hormones and the female hormones during ovarian and menstrual cycles and physiology of pregnancy, and develop basic understanding of the common clinical diseases/conditions related to endocrine and reproductive systems.

•Aims & Objectives:

·To facilitate student learning of the basic physiologic mechanisms underlying renal functions.

·To develop an in depth understanding on how conditions as pregnancy and diabetes affect renal hemodynamics.

·To understand the role of the kidney in fluid and electrolyte homeostasis, including acid-base balance and have some understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of renal diseases.

•Aims & Objectives:

·To help students appreciate how basic neuroscience discoveries can be targeted to and/or applicable to understanding and treating neurodegenerative or neural disorders.

·To help students develop an in depth understanding of some motor system disorders (e.g. Parkinson's disease), regulatory system disorders (e.g. eating disorders) and behavioural and cognitive disorders (e.g. Stroke, Schizophrenia, Epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and Autism).

•Aims & Objectives:

·To facilitate student learning of the key physiologic mechanisms underlying blood function.

·To help students to develop an in-depth understanding of some key concepts related to blood physiology such as the role of platelets in atherothrombosis and the von Willebrand factor in hemostasis.

·To help students develop a solid understanding of the key concepts and issues in cardiovascular physiology.

Aims & Objectives: This curriculum was designed for postgraduate Nursing students to offer the basic knowledge of Human Physiology, which includes functions of Gastrointestinal, Nervous, Renal, Endocrine and Reproductive Systems.
