Course Overview:

The course is delivered to fifth-year medical students over the course of twelve weeks. It is divided into lectures, seminars, tutorials and clinical training sessions in addition to observation of a group of pediatric inpatients and a midterm written examination. By the end of the course, students shall undergo a final written and practical examination.

The course is overseen by the Curricula and Courses Committee in the Department of Pediatrics, and is delivered by a group of highly qualified pediatric faculty members.

PED 474 General Objectives:

The course aims to:

1. Develop clinical skills of dealing with children and their families.
2. Improve students' academic achievement in general pediatric diseases, qualifying them to further their general and specialized postgraduate studies.  

PED 474 Specific Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Know how to take the medical history of pediatric patients.
2. Perform clinical examination on children of all ages and link the medical history with the results of the clinical examination.
3. Identify common causes of pediatric medically relevant complaints and clinical signs.
4. Distinguish emergency cases that require immediate medical attention from other cases.
5. Identify general rules of using laboratory tests to reach the correct diagnosis.
6. Identify common pediatric diseases and this includes diagnosis, tests and treatment.
