Introduction:
The decision in obtaining a postgraduate/ specialty training fellowship is the most important and career oriented one. A fellowship at which brings your dream at highly specialized, unique among your peers and give you the utmost confident in performing certain surgical procedures at high level in shortened period of time.
Through the years , The King Saud University which is situated in the heart of Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia played a major role and served as an instrument of this quest since it is credited as the largest and the best government medical institution in the region which is known to have the facilities and the experience in offering a fellowship in many fields of specialties that caters not only the Saudi Nationals but also in other parts of the Arab speaking countries.
The otolaryngology and head and neck ( ORL H & N ) at King Saud University is unique having the prestige and qualities at being the center of excellence of practicing and providing major otolaryngology and head postgraduate and / or continuing medical education program.
Two-year Facial Plastic Fellowship Program.
Goals and Objectives of Program/ Training:
The objectives of the 2 year Facial plastic Fellowship is to provide an up to date and highly specialized graduate in the field of basic and fundamental aspects of Facial Plastic. At the end of his training, he will be capable at taking surgical tasks at difficult level in an excellent manner. He as well has the basic knowledge to prepare for his clinical and research paper, has the opportunity for advanced training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery has to learn how to set up a well run and successful facial plastic surgery practice and has to gain exposure to the academic responsibilities expected of a fellow trained in the field of facial plastic fellowship. The training includes didactic sessions , clinical care, research opportunities and medical and surgical experiences. All aspect of facial plastic training is covered, with special emphasis on facial and cosmetic of face.
Prerequisite/ Selection Criteria:
To be admitted to facial plastic subspeciality program, candidate must:
- A board eligibility and or board certification in otolaryngology/ plastic surgery.
- Provide a sponsor and its release paper
- Pass the oral interview
- Two ( 2 ) reference letters from consultants with whom the candidate is currently working or has recently worked with for a minimum period of Six ( 6 ) months.
Resources and Facilities:
King Abdulaziz University Hospital is atertiary care academic hospital attached to the College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is located in central area of Riyadh; the University Hospital is a specialized hospital for ORL H and N Surgeryand Ophtalmology with a capacity of 104 in patient beds. Bed capacity specialized for facial plastic surgery is around 10% of the total bed capacity of KAUH. The total ambulatory vsit to all departments in the year 2011 is approximately 314,172 annually including the 68,145 emergency visits. There are about 21,087 visits to ENT CLINIC AND ABOUT 16.90% ( 3,563 ) is for facial plastic surgery . The ORL-HNS surgical case load in 2011 is approximately 2,515; all procedures are performed in the main OR in KAUH with 4 rooms being used each day. Out of this is around 16.52%( 410 ) cases for the facial plastic surgery each year only in KAUH.
The :
- Teaching Staff- At present physician staff consist of three full time facial plastic practitioners with experience in teaching and training in the facial plastic subspeciality and one full time oculoplasty surgeon. In addition, other teaching staff of the affiliated hospitals will also help in accomplishing the programs objectives.
- Equipment- The ORL department in KAUH IS A HIGHLY EQUIPPED CENTER. All examination rooms and operating rooms are equipped with updated and latest instruments and video documentation facilities simulation program in addition to excellent laboratory, radiology and pathology services.
- Surgery- Surgery includes a wide array of office procedure routine facial plastic surgeries as well as complex and revision surgery using different techniques.
- Capacity- Only 1 candidate per academic year will be accepted in the facial plastic program.
- Training Committtee- The training committee will be comprised of the facial plastic consultants at the ORL, H and N Surgery department of college of medicine , KSU, All participating.
