KSU Anesthesia Board

Introduction:

Welcome to the King Saud University Residency Training Program in Anesthesiology. Our mission is to train competent clinical anesthesiologists to provide outstanding patient care and who would be leaders in clinical and academic Anesthesiology. Our Hospitals being tertiary referral centers and equipped with innovative technology, a wide variety of clinical exposure is available for the resident.  Our residents rotate mainly in King Khalid University Hospital and King AbdulAziz University Hospital, beside other governmental hospitals (National Guard, King Faisal specialist Hospital, and Security Forces Hospital). Having a faculty staff with local and divers universal backgrounds, our standards of care comply with international standards and our innovative state of the art teaching techniques are yielding outstanding outcomes. While giving the patient's safety and privacy the utmost priority, a balance between education and service is maintained. While working one-on-one with a faculty member, the professional and collegial environment would provide a friendly atmosphere for teaching and learning on a daily basis on the patient side, thus creating an intellectually stimulating environment for education, and facilitating transitions past specific required milestones, as well as progressive acquisition of adequate competency, autonomy and leadership. Our comprehensive curriculum consist of: consultant based lectures series (with 30 months rotation); Sunday morning conferences that include selected topic review,  journal club, and mortality & morbidity; a didactic curriculum module based level specific (junior versus senior resident) with an interactive in-depth problem based learning approach and  corresponding module based simulation sessions, the latter becoming one of the main tools to teach and reinforce  the learning process; daily teaching by a faculty member in the operating rooms on the patient side; subject specific courses and workshops (Difficult airway management, Ultrasound guided techniques, etc...). The curriculum also includes informative and summative assessment tools (knowledge test exam after each module, mock oral exams, annual written in-training exam, monthly evaluation)

The residency training program at KSU consists of 5 years:

CA1: The first 3 months, the residents are given an intensive orientation course,  consisting of a series of lectures that cover major introductory topics in anesthesiology, with emphasis on the objectives and assesments; Fundamentals of anesthesia and the basic principles in managing the patient peri-operatively; during the second half of the year, residents start taking part of some subspecialty rotations as well as on-call schedule. This includes the PACU and the preoperative patient assessment.

CA2: Exposure to general surgery cases, gynecologic, obstetric, urologic, orthopedics, regional anesthesia, ambulatory cases, ENT and ophthalmology)

CA3: additional exposure to various subspecialties with increased complexities   and requiring increased responsibilities (neuro-anesthesia, thoracic, vascular, cardiac, pediatric, bariatric, critical care),

CA4:  additional exposure to various subspecialties with increased complexities and requiring increased responsibilities and autonomy; pain management

CA5:  Full spectrum of surgical procedures convered; electives as per interest

Research oriented sessions are provided by the faculty members, some of whom are editors (and editor-in-chief) of the Saudi Journal of Anesthesia (the official publication of the Saudi Anesthesia Association), hence promoting the research spirit, in special among the resident body and encouraging the resident to think in a research oriented approach. Residents are encouraged to participate in the national and regional anesthesiology organizations (mainly the Saudi Anesthesia Association) and ongoing scientific activities. Financial support when applicable is granted for that purpose. A wide variety of library resources is available at the medical library, where the resident would access hard copy as well as soft copy medical references and medical journals.

Upon completion of the KSU Post Graduate Educational Program requirements (including final written and oral examinations), the graduate would be fully prepared and able to pursue any subspecialty fellowship program, or to take place in any academic position or clinical job.
