Curriculum Development Unit

Mission and Vision:

The Curriculum Development Unit is responsible for planning, designing, and ensuring successful implementation of the new medical curriculum at the College of Medicine. The unit aims at adopting an integrated curriculum that enforces students’ deep learning, and fosters the development of competencies required from medical graduates to join the workforce at local and international levels.  Therefore, the new medical curriculum aims at preparing students for the future challenges they will face in their career such as critical thinking, professionalism, e-learning, medical informatics, medical research, and life-long learning.

On these bases, the new medical curriculum:

  • Uses a wide range of teaching and learning strategies to meet the learning needs of students such as problem-based learning, small group discussion, interactive lectures, integrated practical classes, bed-side teaching, task-based learning, e-learning, clinical skills lab, standardized patients and simulation.
  • Focuses on deep understanding of concepts and principles, and the development of cognitive skills, critical thinking, and the use of evidence in making decisions.
  • Targets the development of clinical skills, communication skills, and clinical competences.
  • Encourages students to undertake research in areas of their interest and experience the value of research in the development of the medical profession and the community.
  • Fosters the development of good qualities and professional attitude as outlined by medical/health professional bodies at local and international levels.

To achieve these outcomes, the Curriculum Development Unit  conducts training programs to staff and students at different academic needs, creates cases and tutor guides used in the teaching and learning, and introduces innovations and up-to-date developments in medical education. The Curriculum Development Unit leads the way in medical education research and has contributed to publications in Academic Medicine, Medical Teacher, Medical Education and other journals.
