Division of Unit

REHABILITATION CLINIC:

The rehabilitation clinic is a medical clinic with physicians specialized in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (physiatrist). Patients referred to the clinic undergo a complete assessment to determine the physical and psychological needs of the patient. The physiatrist will then manage the patient directly or refer them to other rehabilitation services. The physiatrist may also refer to medical or surgical clinics or paramedical services such as nutrition, social services, and diabetic education as needed.

In Patient beds are not available for the rehabilitation clinic.

 

PHYSICAL THERAPY UNIT:

The physical therapy unit focuses on the management of physical dysfunction and pain secondary to disability, disease, or injury. Patients include children and adults with neurological, orthopedic, developmental, urogynecological, cardiovascular, and other disorders that affect the patient’s ability to function. Prevention and screening programs include postnatal exercises for prevention of stress incontinence and NICU screening for developmental delay. Patient/ family education is stressed and includes knee osteoarthritis and low back pain classes, cerebral palsy education video and class, and home instruction on various orthopedic conditions. Physical therapists perform a physical assessment to establish the patients’ impairments and disabilities and establish a treatment plan that is carried out directly by them or by a physical therapy technician. Progess is monitored by the therapist and discharge is carried out when treatment goals are met or is otherwise deemed necessary. The unit also aids in coordinating training of King Saud University Physical Therapy students and provides comprehensive training for physical therapy interns and physicians.

 

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY:

The occupational therapy unit primarily aims to enhance the patient’s ability to participate in activities of daily life through improving their motor abilities, sensory integration and cognitive skills. The therapist may also make recommendations on how to modify the environment or adapt the activity to make it more accessible and thus decrease the patient’s dependence on others. The unit also performs developmental screening using the Denver Developmental Screening Tool. Patients include children and adults referred with developmental, neurological, and orthopedic conditions. In addition, OT is vital in the care of burn and plastic surgery patients. Occupational therapists perform an assessment of the patient to determine their functional limitations and the appropriate course of treatment. Patient/Family education is an integral element of the treatment plan. Progress is monitored by the therapist and discharge is determined according to the goals of treatment.

 

ORTHOTICS UNIT:

The orthotics unit provides ready made or custom orthosis to decrease pain, correct/ prevent deformity, and improve functional ability. The orthotist may measure, design, and manufacture orthosis that are prescribed. The orthotist may communicate  with the physiatrist or the referring party in the event that the orthosis is not believed to be suitable or is not available and make recommendations on alternatives.

 

COMMUNICATION DISORDERS UNIT:

The communication disorders unit was established in 2007 to meet the needs of patients participating in rehabilitation services in King Khaled University Hospital. The focus of this unit is on adults with neurological deficits that suffer from disorders in speech and language and the needs of the children with developmental disorders that are receiving physical or occupational therapy in KKUH. The speech and language pathologist may also provide other services such as prevention, screening, and counseling. A speech-language pathologist (SLP) assesses the patient and devises a treatment plan. Referral for further investigations or follow up in the department in King Abdulaziz University Hospital may be arranged.

 

PSYCHOLOGY UNIT:

The psychology unit was established in 2009 to meet the needs of patients and their families dealing with psychological disorders as a result of their physical disease or disabilities. The primary focus of this unit is on children and adults with neurological deficits. The clinical psychologist provides assessment, counseling, and management of various emotional or behavioral disorders. The psychologist may use psychological, mental, and neuropsychological assessments or measures to determine the needs of the psychiatric assessment is determined, referral to the psychiatric clinic will be made through the rehabilitation physician.
