Department Units
The Department of Pathology brings together a group of academic and clinical units that represent the core disciplines of pathology and laboratory medicine. These units support undergraduate medical education, specialist training, research activity, and diagnostic and consultative practice across the department.
Anatomical Pathology Unit
Focuses on the study of structural changes in tissues and organs caused by disease, including the examination of surgical biopsies to support accurate diagnosis and clinical decision-making.
Cytopathology Unit
Provides cell-based diagnostic assessment using specimens from body fluids and needle aspiration procedures, including cytology examinations, cervical smears, and fine-needle aspiration cytology.
Molecular Pathology Unit
Uses advanced molecular techniques to analyze DNA and RNA, detect genetic alterations, and identify molecular features of disease in support of precision diagnosis and personalized medicine.
Immunopathology Unit
Focuses on immune-mediated disease processes and supports diagnostic immunology through advanced techniques such as ELISA and immunofluorescence.
Forensic Medicine Unit
Addresses medico-legal cases, investigates unnatural causes of death, and prepares medico-legal reports in collaboration with the relevant authorities.
Clinical Biochemistry Unit
Teaches core and clinical concepts in biochemistry and supports laboratory investigations that contribute to the diagnosis and monitoring of metabolic and organ-related diseases.
Medical Microbiology Unit
Covers the teaching and diagnosis of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, and contributes to the support of infection prevention and control programs.
Transfusion Medicine Unit
Teaches the principles and practice of transfusion medicine and supports safe blood transfusion services, including compatibility testing, antibody screening, and blood donation processes.
Department Committees
The department committees support academic and administrative governance across teaching, training, research, and development. Each committee works within a defined scope and reports through the department’s leadership and council, helping to strengthen internal coordination, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.
Postgraduate Studies Committee
Oversees postgraduate, residency, and fellowship programs, monitors the quality of training and assessment, and supports alignment with approved local and international standards.
Undergraduate Academic Committee
Follows up on undergraduate courses, supports course development and delivery, reviews student and faculty performance, and helps ensure that courses meet the required academic standards.
Internship Committee
Oversees medical internship training, coordinates with relevant stakeholders, and follows up on training quality, trainee satisfaction, and assessment processes during the internship period.
Research Committee
Supports research activity in the department, contributes to research planning, promotes student and trainee involvement in research, and helps enhance research quality, funding opportunities, and collaboration.
Faculty and Staff Affairs Committee
Reviews departmental human-resource needs and considers matters related to recruitment, promotion, training, and other faculty and staff affairs within the department.
Academic Development and Quality Committee
Follows up on academic development and quality activities, including strategic planning, performance indicators, annual reporting, accreditation-related work, and initiatives to improve educational quality and outcomes.
Media and Community Engagement Committee
Highlights the department’s role, updates its content on the College portal, coordinates with media, community engagement, and health-volunteering units, and documents departmental activities and achievements.
