Postgraduate

The program is four years which is divided into 12 clinical rotations per year. The rotations are in various disciplines. The program is under supervision of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. Approximately 6 rotations per year of training in the Emergency Department Approximately 6 rotations per year of training in the Emergency Department.


The post graduate director and the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education are responsible for:


- Overseeing the administration of all Residency Training Programs at King Saud University


- Liaising with other internal groups and external organizations regarding Postgraduate Medical Education


- Conducting internal program reviews and arranging external reviews of all Residency Training Programs to ensure they meet the standards of King Saud University and or Saudi Council for Health Specialties

- Promoting cross-disciplinary themes and workshops, and fostering collaboration among Residency Training Programs


The first postgraduate training was established in 1984 with the approval of the KSU diploma in Ophthalmology. After 2 years the diploma was converted into the KSU fellowship in Ophthalmology. From that time onwards, a number of specialties and sub specialties were established and among them were the KSU fellowship in Anesthesia, Radiology, Pathology and others. Currently, there are 46 postgraduate training programs in the College of Medicine; 12 are KSU fellowship programs, 2 are KSU diploma programs, 9 are combined KSU and Saudi Board

programs,15 are Saudi Board programs, 4 are master’s and doctoral programs, and 4 postgraduate trainings are still under process for approval.

The college (with its affiliated hospitals) is considered one of the largest postgraduate training center in the Gulf region. It has also been attractive for many Arab nationals who come to do their fellowship training with us.

This postgraduate training provides every candidate a practical clinical work and one-on-one tuition in the operating rooms, combined with preoperative and postoperative rounds in the in-patients wards and Intensive Care Unit. The program was officially approved in 1990 and later it became a joint program with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. There are 41 graduates from this specialty since the start of the program.
