King Abdulaziz University Hospital-Business Center

Introduction:

Business centers at university hospitals have been established after university president's direction on 1424H about Saudi specialists working after hours. This direction depends on ministers council resolution 164 issued on 1422/6/8 which allow Saudi specialists to work after official time in public institutions affiliated to it in all health sectors with the necessity to commit to the mentioned roles in resolution 123 ( the university president's resolution and council of ministers' resolution are attached.

In 1426, it begins with the business center at KAUH, and then followed by KKUH in 1427. Medical mangers have been assigned for each center attached to college of medicine's dean, they have been given full authorities to supervise the business centers and put a list for patients on medical services' prices that must compete with private sector. They also authorized to hire administrative employees as appointments' coordinators as well as medical support services' employees such as nursing and specialists and put clinics' appointments, etc.

The business center at KAUH covers ENT and Phoniatrics and support clinics like audiology, optometric, laboratory and radiology after official work time. The clinics are covered according to cooperated specialists in coordination with the center administration. These clinics provide medical services such as surgical, CT, ENT and ophthalmology special radiology, in addition to, laboratory tests for visiting and admission patients as well as hearing test like PTA, Tympano and balance tests.

Business Center Goals:

The aim of establishing a business center at KAUH is to provide medical care to patients who are not eligible for treatment in KAUH by providing health services of top Saudi specialists after working hours in competitive prices with medical potentials which don’t find in other health sectors.

Administrative and medical departments in business center at KAUH:

  1. Medical director: AHMED M. AL ARFAJ has been assigned by college of medicine's dean as medical manger for health services business center at KAUH. He has full authorities to hire center employees like administrative coordinators, nursing staff, cooperated specialists and a support medical staff and also put exchange mechanism for employees' salaries and bonuses in direct coordination with the financial administration in KSU.
  2. Administrative director: has been assigned as an administrative director who is directly attached to the medical director to coordinate and follow administrative and financial affairs.
  3. Financial administration: it coordinates with KSU's financial administration to hire a group of accountants and financial observers to follow business center's account and fund and to put exchange mechanism for employees' salaries and bonuses as well as following ministry of finance's share from business center's revenue. (A copy of financial administration's agreement with the center.
  4. Appointment department: it's supervised by a group of employees to follow and preserve visitors and admission patients as well as to answer patients' questions.
  5. Specialists:  a group of specialists, who are professors at college of medicine in ENT, ophthalmology, swallowing and Phoniatrics, are cooperating with the center.
  6. Support medical staff: it includes nurses, internal physicians, and pediatricians in night-time clinics.
  7. Support clinical services: it includes special services like radiology, laboratory and audiology where a special price in these services has been marked in coordination with departments' administrations. ( a list of radiology, laboratory and audiology' s test are attached)
  8. Medical records department: it follows visitors and admission patients' files, edit and print medical reports.

Mechanism of the reception of business center's patients:

  1. Reservation of patients appointments: it receives patients' calls those who want an appointment in business center on number phones specified for the center (2918787, 0500225522, 4786100 extension 1144 – 1141). Then. A medical history about the patient condition is taken, next, the patient is directed to appropriate specialist according to his/her complain. Personal information like name, gender and age are taken as well as patient's file number and contact info to remind of her/his appointment. The patient is informed of his/her appointment and the name of the specialist.
  2. When a patient comes to an appointment, he/she is directed to the clinic by receptionists after a value of examination is cut and the patient is given a copy of the cash receipt.
  3. In case of no prevous file for a patient in the hospital, he/she is given an open file's sample to fill out with reguired information and  a copy of ID. Then, the receptionist open a permanent file for the patient in business center and send the patient to the clinic.
  4. When a patient needs more tests like x-rays and others, the patient is informed with its costs and then the receptionist cuts the value then prints the cash receipt and give it to the patient. Next, send him/ her to examination department.
  5.  When a patient needs after examination a follow-up appointment, the date is registered according to the attending specialist and the patient is given a ticket of next appointment.
  6. When a patient needs a surgical intervention, the patient is informed of procedure's costs. The tests and admission to the surgery is defined by attending specialist. Then, the admission procedures are completely explained to the patient by a receptionist.
  7. When a patient attend for admission, a sample of required test is taken by Lab and then he/she is send to the doctor in admission to examine the patient. Next, the patient is send to receptionists to cut the value of surgical intervention and to complete admission procedures.
  8. When a patient is check out of admission, receptionists give the patient a follow-up appointment and an admission leave as well as his/her companion if there any. The patient is advised to go to ER of he/she experience unusual symptoms after surgery.

Business Center Clinics:

  1. Ophthalmology clinic: all cases related to ophthalmology are received like anterior segment, cornea diseases, cornea implant, Cataract, lens implant, vision correction, retina inflammation, Diabetic Retinopathy, vitreous, glaucoma, cataract tube implant, Strabismus and Orbital Surgery, etc. these operations are performed by top KAUH and college of medicine specialists.
  2.  Note: (cornea tissue is provided from KKESH where the tissue value is deposit in corneas bank. Business center and cornea department are addressed to provide the tissue and send it before surgery)
  3. ENT clinic: all cases related to ear, nose and throat are received like amygdale diseases, nose adenoids, nasal sinus, head and neck tumors, nasal allergy, ear and nose plastic surgery, Vocal cords‏, ear surgeries, ear bones correction and electronic cochlea implant.
  4. Phoniatrics, voice and swallowing diseases: all cases related to speech disorders are received like stuttering, stammering, Hypernasality, speech disorders, after cochlea rehabilitation and cases related to swallowing and vocal cords. Voice diseases are diagnosed with laryngoscope and then determine whether the patient needs surgical interventions in order to be referred to ENT clinic.
