Department History

Department of Emergency Medicine at the King Saud University Hospitals was named initially as Accident and Emergency as section of General Surgery in 1982. The Division of Emergency Medicine was placed within the Department of Surgery, under the direction of Dr. M. Khoshaim 1990 and then led by Dr. Musaed Al Salman, who is the father of Emergency Medicine in the gulf and middle east region, he started to establish the pillars stone of the Emergency Medicine specialty in the kingdom and recruited the first patch of emergency residents.  Batch of resident were recruited to go to Canada and get certified in Emergency Medicine another batch were recruited to get local training to come back to the DEM as emergentiologist to staff the department and focus on developing the emergency medicine services and program.
The Division was extremely successful in developing an outstanding clinical, educational, and research portfolio. In 2001 Dr Waleed Murshed was the medical director till the arrival of Dr Salih Al Tamimi, the first certified emergency medicine specialist who took over the medical direction till 2007.
Dr. Zohair Al Aseri takes over Accident and Emergency in November 2008, the Director of the university agreed to the Division’s application to be granted full, autonomous academic departmental status and named Dr. Zohair Al Aseri as its Chairman. And the department name changed officially to DEM (Department of Emergency Medicine).Today, the Department of Emergency Medicine at King Saud University has approximately 15 board-certified or board-eligible faculty members and a full roster of 25 residents enrolled in Saudi, Canadian, or Australian emergency medicine programs.
Our growing and dynamic research program offers opportunities for individual initiatives as well as collaborative projects with other departments on King Saud University Hospitals.
More than 10 years ago, young physicians trained in the new specialty of emergency medicine accepted the responsibility of organizing an emergency department at academic medical center. Since then, our program has grown exponentially in terms of staffing and number of patients served and has earned a national reputation for excellence in training and academic leadership in the specialty.
