Vascular Surgery
Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program
INTRODUCTION:
Vascular Surgery specialty passed through many revolutionary moves over the past few decades. These revolutions have many aspects including recognition, training and advancement of diagnostic and interventional procedure. In the 1950’s Vascular Surgery was part of general surgery and in some centers as part of cardio-vascular and thoracic surgery (CVT). With advancement in knowledge and technology, vascular surgery started to be recognized as a solo subspecialty in the early 1970’s and formal training started in the late 1970’s in many centers in North America and Europe. As a result, more recognition and support for Vascular Surgery have been observed in many centers worldwide.
In Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, the recognition of Vascular Surgery as a solo subspecialty started in the early 1990’s in few hospitals in Riyadh and Jeddah with the arrival of the first trained Saudi vascular surgeons to Saudi Arabia. King Saud University took the lead in the recognition of Vascular Surgeons as a subspecialty by establishing the first academic division of vascular Surgery in Saudi Arabia in 1993. After which, Division of Vascular Surgery at King Saud University took the lead in co-coordinating a vascular surgery club meeting Every 3 months to discuss various vascular health problems in Riyadh, arranging annual workshops and symposia. Also started the first and only structured vascular surgery fellow-ship training program in the GCC countries in 1998.
