Schedule

The Gastroenterology Unit staff are working from 7.45 Am -4.30 Pm Saturday- Wednesday. Each staff covers one clinic/week and 2 endoscopy sessions /week.

The average number of patients/clinic range from 15-20 patients per clinic and about 20 patients/per endoscopy session.

The admission under gastroenterology unit is either elective from the clinics, or by fax from other hospitals, or from transfer from other units after being accepted by the GI consultant, the bed capacity for the GI unit is 15 patients (male and female) in 2 wards; 23A for male patients and 32A for female patients. There are also 1-2 patients daily admitted under GI unit in the Day care unit for either receiving Infliximab infusion or for procedures like liver biopsy or ascitic tap.

The day care unit is covered by medical resident rotating in the unit and supervised by fellow and consultant in charge for the ward.

Each staff also are conducting 2 clinical bed side teachings /week. One for 341 students and the other for 441 students with 3hours teaching activity.

The staff have clinical unit round once/week for 3 hours each Wednesday AM in which all staff attend to discuss the inpatients in details and put plan for their management.

Each staff covers one week/month on-call service or consultation service.

The GI on call service covers 24 hours/7 days which include the weekends, the following areas are covered; emergency room, inpatient wards and outpatient clinics, it is covered by GI fellows / registrars under direct supervision by the on call consultant.

Each fellow/registrar are required to see all the emergency room call within 6-24 hours and document it in the patient’s file after discussing with the consultant on-call

The on-call staff is responsible for all in-patients under GI service and he/she should round on them 3 times /weeks.

The consultation services are covered by fellow/registrar supervised by the consultant on consultation duties. The fellow should see the patients referred to GI unit within 24 hours and report to the consultant who should round and see them with the fellow average 3 round/week.

The on-call Rota is made in the unit by senior registrar in the unit and signed by the unit head and department chairman.

The on-call consultant is responsible to arrange coverage by his/her colleague in case of emergency leave and the Rota should by revised and signed by the unit head and distributed to all departments concerned.
